Zirconia Implants in Nashville, TN

Zirconia implants are the metal free tooth replacement option you’ve been searching for.  They are a proven alternative to titanium implants; can be used in the rare case of a titanium allergy, for patients who want a more natural look, or for patients who simply want to avoid having metal in their body.

The zirconia implant is restored with a zirconia abutment, carbon fiber screw, and an all ceramic crown – allowing for a completely metal-free tooth replacement. Its naturally white appearance eliminates the gray tint or darkness that can occur in the gums with a titanium implant, creating a more natural look. Zirconia also maintains the same durability and strength as titanium while eliminating some of the risks, like an allergy or leaching of metal ions into the body.

Nashville Restorative Dentistry is a leader in zirconia implants and other metal-free dentistry practices and serves the entire Nashville, TN metro area and beyond, including Brentwood, Franklin, and Cool Springs.

Zirconia Dental Implants Explained in 60 Seconds

What are zirconia implants made of?

Zirconia is an oxide of the element zirconium, which the body actually sees as a metal-free ceramic called zirconium dioxide. The compound is naturally white, so it’s a natural choice for dental implants. We use ZERAMEX® zirconia implants at Nashville Restorative Dentistry, which feature high biocompatibility and corrosion resistance to ensure long-term stability. They’re also not affected by contact with oral bacteria and have a lower affinity with plaque than titanium implants, so the risk of inflammation around the implant is greatly reduced.

Patients often prefer the white of zirconia because of its bright white look. Most people will never be able to tell the difference between the real teeth and the implant. The dark metal of titanium, however, can sometimes be seen through the gumline, which can unfortunately draw attention to the implant. There have even been scientific studies measuring how well zirconia implants mimic the look of natural teeth1.

Zirconia Implants vs. Titanium Implants

Titanium and titanium alloys have been around for decades and until recently have been the only material choice for dental implants. Zirconia is a newer, more modern alternative. Zirconia has been proven to be a reliable dental implant material as an alternative to titanium while also having several advantages over it, including:

  • Avoiding the risk of leaching metal ions into the body
  • A more natural look as compared to titanium
  • High compatibility with human tissue, leading to low bacterial accumulation, inflammation, and infection rates
  • No risk of long term metal corrosion

Additionally, according to a 2019 study2, titanium implants may cause issues in people with autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. If you have any one of these conditions, zirconia implants may be the best choice for you.
